LONDON — An expert in checking for drug taking among sportsmen and women will lead the London 2012 Olympic anti doping team.
Wrexham firefighter Steve Roberts has already gained experience as an observer with the World Anti Doping Agency.
In recent months, he has been training more than 200 anti doping control officers to ultimately test around 5,000 athletes at the Olympics and Paralympics.
He leaves today to spend a month at London’s Olympic stadium where he will lead the team.
Steve, 43, has been undertaking drug testing at a variety of sporting events across the UK and Europe for a number of years. He will now be taking time away from work on the fire station to ensure all competitors reach the stringent standards required by the games.
Steve said: “I heard the organisers were looking for volunteers to help with the drug testing at the games for the XXX Olympiad and put my name forward. I was absolutely thrilled when I heard that I had been selected to head up the anti doping control team.”
