Ohio volunteer firefighter dies while working crash scene

The 24-year-old was found unconscious at the scene and later pronounced dead at the hospital

FRIENDSHIP, Ohio — The Portsmouth Post of the Ohio Highway Patrol is investigating the death of a volunteer firefighter that occurred about 2:30 a.m. Sunday.

Rocky E. Dunkin, 24, a Nile Township volunteer firefighter, was at the scene of a crash with injuries on U.S. 52 near Friendship (just west of Portsmouth). While assisting medical personnel with the crash victim, Dunkin was found unconscious at the scene by fellow firefighters. He was transported to Southern Ohio Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at about 3:15 a.m.

The incident remains under investigation by personnel with the Portsmouth Post.
