ATHENS, Pa. — Ron Fassett Jr. touches the red door of the locker where his fire gear is stored. His last name is written in permanent ink on the name tag at the top of the locker — a permanent reminder to him that he will always be a member of the Athens Township Fire Department, even if he can’t physically participate in fighting fires right now.
Ron remembers a time when he fought fires. Now he is fighting for his life.
Ron’s thoughts have been spinning for the last week. He’s been offered the chance to have a life-saving surgery by a world-renowned surgeon and in the process be given a third chance at life. The main concern for Ron is how he and his family, who are living on a modest income, will be able to afford not only the surgery, but also the trip to Chicago.
