The Hays Daily News

ALTON, Kan. — An Osborne County firefighter died Tuesday in the line of duty, Kansas State Firefighter Association Secretary Steve Hirsch announced today.

After responding to a structure fire at a farm home 4 miles southwest of Alton, 50-year-old firefighter Lyle Lewis reported a need to cool off. He was treated by Emergency Medical Services personnel at the scene before being transported to Osborne County Hospital. He was declared dead on arrival.

Lewis was one of several Osborne County, Stockton and Woodston rural firefighters who responded to the fire on a day when temperatures surpassed 90 degrees. It was after Lewis’ second entry into the home, approximately one hour after he was dispatched to the scene from Osborne County Rural Fire Department No. 3 at Alton, that he showed signs of needing assistance.
