Paramedics took a resident and a firefighter to Anne Arundel Medical Center for treatment and evaluation Friday following a sizable fire that scorched a Crownsville home, fire officials said.

The man was in stable condition after inhaling smoke, Anne Arundel County Fire Department officials said. The county firefighter was medically evaluated as a precaution.

Firefighters responded around 1:15 p.m. to the 800 block of Birch Trail for a garage fire, said Capt. Russ Davies, fire department spokesman.

He said the three occupants of the two-story home had called 911 and evacuated with their dog before firefighters arrived. A smoke alarm alerted them.

When firefighters arrived, smoke was billowing and flames were protruding from the front of the home and attached garage, Davies said.

They requested backup, Davies said, and eventually as many as 46 firefighters descended on the scene.

Firefighters with the county, the Annapolis Fire Department and the Naval Support Activity Annapolis Fire Department doused home with water and tamed the blaze in approximately 30 minutes, Davies said.

Staffed by sworn police officers, the fire department’s Anne Arundel County Fire and Explosives Investigation Unit is investigating the cause of the fire, which caused an estimated $300,000 of damage.
