Pirates steal firefighting equipment from Croatian tanker

The attack lasted 21 minutes and was undertaken by six pirates; no one was injured

KANDLA, India — Firefighting equipment on a tanker in an Indian port was stolen by pirates Wednesday night.

The Maritime Executive reported that no one was injured after six armed pirates boarded the Croatian tanker. The incident lasted 21 minutes and the pirates fled after taking deck fixtures and firefighting equipment.

“The material damage, due to rapid and professional response of the crew, [was limited to] part of the deck fire-fighting equipment and the butterfly nuts on the lids of the tanks,” Dragutin Pavletić, director of the ship’s operator, said.

The captain of the vessel made a distress call to local authorities, but the pirates left before police officers arrived.

The apparent motive in the attack was robbery rather than kidnapping or hijacking.
