EDISON, N.J. — Cops and firefighters are no longer allowed to give political donations in Edison after a sweeping new edict aimed at reforming the town’s beleaguered police department.

Mayor Antonia Ricigliano’s executive order, issued Friday, comes amid her re-election effort in a town whose police are a force not just on the streets but also in its elections. The civil war among the town’s most powerful civil servants earned renewed attention after a series in The Star-Ledger uncovered rampant infighting and stunning misbehavior among its officers that stretches back decades.

The calls for reform grew even louder after a township police officer was accused of setting a superior officer’s house on fire. Officer Michael Dotro was charged with five counts of attempted murder after authorities say he burned down the Monroe Township home of Captain Mark Anderko. Anderko had recommended Dotro for a psychological evaluation after numerous complaints, according to prosecutors.
