CATSKILL, N.Y. — Volunteer firefighter Joel Shanks complained at a Village Board meeting Monday that he has been placed on administrative leave because he filed safety complaints about the fire department with the state and a federal agency.

Shanks said a March 14, 2006, suspension needs to be lifted to avoid further lawsuits.

Following the session, Shanks said the suspension arose because he complained about the use of outdated safety equipment, an outdated safety inspection on a ladder truck, missing radios, firefighters with facial hair wearing air masks, and safety harnesses that need to be replaced.
