LONDON — The threat of a national strike by firefighters was raised today in a row over pensions. The Fire Brigades Union is seeking an urgent meeting with the Government to try to resolve the dispute after claiming that the pension rights of firefighters were under threat.
The row flared after three former firemen from London who retired on grounds of ill-health were told that their pensions would cease.
The union said it feared other firefighters could now have ill-health pensions withdrawn. The FBU accused the former Office of the Deputy Prime Minister, now the Department for Communities and Local Government, of misleading the union and parliament over changes to the pension scheme.
