BETHESDA, Md. — A judge denied a peace order to three firefighters claiming they feared for their lives after being confronted by a colleague about a Confederate flag license plate.

Bethesda Magazine reported that the men filed a peace order against Idris DeBruhl, a 12-year veteran firefighter. The men claimed he threatened them after a confrontation over a fellow firefighter’s Confederate flag license plate.

DeBruhl said he wanted to speak out against the racist “culture” of the Bethesda Fire Department and denied threatening the other firefighters.

Judge Zuberi Williams denied the peace order, but called DeBruhl “unconscionable” and “way out of line.”

“I know you are disappointed with me, but I will always follow the law,” Williams said to the petitioning firefighters. “I’m not happy with anyone’s behavior here.”
