Fire station reopens despite mayor’s disapproval

Mayor Tom Coyne said “politics can go to hell” after voters supported the firefighting ordinance

BROOK PARK, Ohio — The Ruple Parkway fire station reopened Wednesday afternoon after all.

“I’ve opened the station so I can move forward,” Mayor Tom Coyne said Wednesday, after firefighters began to dust and man the station and parked two fire trucks there.

By more than a two-thirds majority, voters approved an ordinance on Feb. 3 reopening Ruple and setting minimum numbers of firefighters there and at the city’s other remaining station on Holland and Engle roads. After the vote, as before, Coyne said the ordinance wasn’t binding and Ruple, which he’d closed in May, would stay closed. Would it be bad politics to defy the voters? “Politics can go to hell,” he said.
