SELBYVILLE, Del. — A Delaware fire police officer was struck and killed by a fire department vehicle Friday afternoon while directing traffic at the scene of a separate crash, officials say.

Selbyville Fire Police Officer Laura Madara, 56, was struck by a fire police truck going in reverse as the scene was being cleared, according to the Delaware State Police. Madara was transported to the hospital where she was pronounced dead.

Police said the truck was being used to assist with traffic control at the scene and was driven by a 79-year-old man at the time that Madara was struck. The incident is being investigated by the Delaware State Police Troop 7 Collision Reconstruction Unit.

According to the Selbyville Volunteer Fire Company, Madara was also the president of the department’s Ladies Auxiliary.

“We ask that you keep the Madara Family, the Selbyville Fire Company and all of those that loved Laura in your thoughts and prayers,” the department said in a statement.
