CHEYENNE, Wyo. — A Wyoming assistant fire chief who contracted COVID-19 while on an out-of-state wildfire assignment died Saturday after a six-month battle with the disease.
Laramie County Fire District #2 Assistant Chief Charles “Chuck” Scottini, 67, died “peacefully with his family by his side” on Saturday morning, fire officials announced.
Scottini contracted the virus last October while battling wildfires in Steamboat Springs, Colorado, and was treated at the University of Utah Hospital for nearly six months, according to the U.S. Fire Administration. He returned to Wyoming last Wednesday when he was transferred to hospice care before passing away Saturday.
Scottini had served with Laramie County Fire District #2 for 23 years, rising up the ranks to assistant chief.
“Chuck was our Mr. fix it, our mentor, and was a wealth of knowledge to the Fire service,” district officials wrote. “He will be dearly missed by all.”
