Md. firefighter injured in fall from ladder at apartment fire

A firefighter fell from the second floor and two others were also injured in the Sunday morning blaze

BURKITTSVILLE, Md. — A Maryland firefighter was injured in a fall while battling a blaze at a post office and apartment building Sunday morning.

Two others were also treated for injuries following the blaze, according to WDVM.

“One with a burn and the other was medical-related and then we had a firefighter that had fallen from a ladder from the second floor who was transported to the hospital,” said Frederick County Fire & Rescue Deputy Chief Steve Leatherman.

Witnesses reported hearing a loud boom before the post office and neighboring apartment building went up in flames.

“The whole thing was engulfed in flames, you can see it went up in total smoke immediately,” said Jessica Oyarzo, who saw the fire from her nearby home. “One of the gentlemen that I saw that lives here (was) just out in a pair of shorts and no shoes because he obviously ran out in a hurry.”

Multiple crews from Frederick and Washington County responded to the fire, according to Frederick County Fire & Rescue.
