BETHUNE, S.C. — An S.C. mom who served as a volunteer firefighter and a US mail carrier died in a crash on Wednesday morning, authorities say.
Erica M. Broughton, age 26, of Cassatt was named the 2011 First Responder of the Year at Buffalo-Mt. Pisgah Fire Department, which is in Kershaw County. Broughton died while she was on her mail route around 9 am when her car went off the left side of Highway 1 just south of Bethune and hit a concrete statue on the side of the road, WIS-TV reported.
WIS-TV reported the statue came through the windshield and hit Broughton, who leaves behind a young son and husband of 3 years, Derek. “It’s with heavy hearts that we report the untimely passing of Firefighter Erica Broughton in an off-duty accident. Erica was an active volunteer firefighter with our department and has served with the department since 2011,” said Chief Chris Jones of the Buffalo – Mt. Pisgah Fire Department.
