Off-duty Wis. FF-EMT killed while working on safety crew at speedway

River Falls Firefighter-EMT Eddie Nicholson, 62, was clearing the speedway after a collision when a bus rolled onto him

RIVER FALLS, Wis. — An off-duty Wisconsin firefighter-EMT was killed Friday while clearing the scene of a collision as part of a speedway safety crew. 

River Falls Firefighter-EMT Eddie Nicholson, 62, died after a damaged bus rolled onto him in the aftermath of the crash at Cedar Lake Speedway, according to RiverTowns.net

Nicholson was a second-generation firefighter and a more than 30-year veteran of the River Falls Fire Department, according to a statement from the department.

He was also an active member of River Falls EMS, the agency said in a statement. 

In addition to his service at the fire and EMS departments and on the speedway safety crew, Nicholson worked driving tow trucks for Twin Cities Transport and Recovery.

Fire Chief Scott Nelson described Nicholson as the "unofficial leader" of the department, according to RiverTowns.net. 

Nicholson was honored with a procession of emergency vehicles on Sunday morning.

 

RFFD is reeling from the tragic loss of one of our own, Eddie Nicholson, a second generation firefighter with over 30 years of service to the River Falls Fire Department. Eddie also served with River Falls EMS and put in countless hours serving his community. Eddie was a well-loved icon in the area, His “real” job was working with heavy tow trucks for Twin Cities Transport and Recovery. One of his passions was working at the Cedar Lake Speedway as part of the safety crew. Eddie was loved by all and will be surely missed by Kathy and their family, friends and our community. The River Falls Fire Department and Eddie’s family would like to thank all the Fire Departments, EMS and Law Enforcement agencies, Tow companies and Cedar Lake Speedway, who helped bring Eddie Back home to River Falls. Thanks also to the people who showed up on a cold raining day to honor Eddie. Your outpouring of support and sympathy is unprecedented!
