Texas firefighter fatally shot after off-duty altercation

Police said Woodlands Fire Department firefighter Nicholas Daniel was shot after going to the suspect’s house to confront him about some text messages

MONTGOMERY, Texas — An off-duty firefighter was shot and killed Saturday after an argument, according to officials.

ABC13 reported that Woodlands Fire Department firefighter Nicholas Daniel was shot after allegedly going to the suspect’s home to confront him about an issue over some text messages, according to police.

Police said the two men had been at a party earlier in the evening.

The suspect said before Daniel arrived, he had been contacted by someone else who told him Daniel was coming and that he needed to lock his doors.

According to the suspect, he was standing outside of his home when Daniel arrived and watched him open the front door of the house. The suspect said he then came from behind the house and got into a fight with Daniel.

Police said Daniel was shot several times with a handgun.

Daniel was an 18-year veteran firefighter, according to a released statement from his daughter, Alaina Baumel.

“My dad was the definition of a good person,” Baumel said. “My dad was the man who would literally drop everything to help you. He was selfless and always wanting to challenge himself.”

“He was the one running into the fires and saving people as others were running away, even after having very large debris from a house fire fall on him, which seriously injured him,” the statement continued. “My father was someone to be proud of and my sister and I will miss him every day. I pray that no one goes through this type of pain and I pray we get justice for my father. I will not stop until he gets justice. He deserves that, not bullets.”
