Peter Phan’s body was recovered about 50 yards offshore from where witnesses last saw him

KITTITAS COUNTY, Wash. — The body of volunteer firefighter Peter Phan was recovered from Lake Cle Elum.

According to the sheriff’s office, Phan was paddle boarding on Lake Cle Elum with a friend when high winds and waves knocked him off into the water, YakTri News reports. He was not wearing a life jacket at the time.

Phan was a volunteer firefighter with the Mountain View Fire & Rescue Department. Cadaver dogs, underwater remote cameras and sonar technology were used to locate his body.
