METHUEN, Mass. — When Lt. Ryan Fortune walked into a party at the fire station this week he thought he had ruined the surprise for someone else.

On Tuesday, Fortune was honored for his actions while off duty during a five-alarm fire in Salisbury on Aug. 14 . Fortune, alongside another bystander, is credited with saving a man’s life.

The North Andover resident had been at the beach with his family, but rushed towards the flames upon seeing thick black smoke coming from homes. He checked surrounding homes to make sure residents had evacuated and helped rescue a man suffering from severe burns and smoke exposure.

Fire Chief David Toto said Fortune hadn’t made much of a deal about his actions, only volunteering the story when asked. “He really didn’t say much about it,” according to Toto.

The fire caused serious damage to four homes and two people were seriously injured.

“Lt. Fortune’s actions that day demonstrate the very best qualities of a firefighter and fire officer,” Toto wrote in a press release. “He recognized a dangerous situation, understood that immediate action was needed, and put the safety of others ahead of his own without hesitation. His training, courage, and leadership helped save a life and made a meaningful difference in the outcome of this fire.”

Toto described Fortune as an “experienced fire officer” having spent 23 years with the department. During the ceremony Fortune was recognized as a Hometown Hero by Wellpoint, a health benefits company, and 98.5 The Sports Hub Bruins Radio Network.

“Firefighters embody a remarkable kind of courage – the willingness to put the safety of others before their own, on duty or not,” Wellpoint General Manager David Morales said.

“Lt. Fortune stepped up when his community needed him most. His bravery, selflessness, and commitment to others represent the very best of the fire service and the kind of leadership that makes our communities stronger. We’re honored to recognize Lt. Fortune and celebrate the impact he made that day.”

Toto said Fortune’s actions “exemplify what it means to put service to others above oneself. We are extremely proud to see him recognized as a Hometown Hero.”
