TROY, N.Y. — Two city police officers rescued a bedridden woman as her second-floor bedroom filled with smoke Wednesday morning, Fire Chief Thomas Garrett said.

Officers Shane Kiley and Robert Gaudette rushed into 419 Fourth St. as smoke and flames billowed from the burning house next door at 417 Fourth St.

Kiley and Guadette said they plucked the woman out of her bed using her sheets as a stretcher.

“We ran down the stairs like crazy,” Kiley said.

Gaudette said he wondered how they were going to get out as the smoke became heavier.

The woman, whose name was not immediately available, was taken to a hospital for treatment. No other injuries were reported.

The fire alarm came in about 10:30 a.m. When firefighters arrived, 417 Fourth St. was burning, and smoke and flames were spreading to the adjoining homes at 415 and 419 Fourth St.

The second floor of 417 Fourth St. was gutted, while 419 Fourth St. suffered damage, Garrett said. He praised firefighters for saving 415 Fourth St., which had flames shooting across its roof.

Firefighters were able to quickly extinguish the blaze in under 30 minutes. The cause of the fire is under investigation, Garrett said.
