PITTSBURG, Calif. — An accidental kitchen fire temporarily displaced an elderly Pittsburg couple Sunday morning, the Contra Costa Fire District said.

The one-alarm blaze ignited in the kitchen of a home in the 300 block of West 13th Street about 9:05 a.m. Sunday and reached the attic before it was contained about 20 minutes later, Battalion Chief William Walker said.

A 93-year-old man confined to a wheelchair needed to be rescued by firefighters from one of the home’s bedrooms, while his wife was able to make it outside on her own.

The fire is believed to have started when a stove burner was left on, Walker said. It caused about $70,000 worth of damage. The residents made their own temporary housing arrangements.
