PEACH BOTTOM TOWNSHIP, Pa. — Delta-Cardiff firefighters saved two pit bulls and their 13 puppies from a smoke-filled cabin in Peach Bottom Township Friday morning.
Crews were called to the one-room cabin at 90 Woodland Dell Road at 11:33 a.m., according to Delta-Cardiff Assistant Fire Chief Joe Strickler.
There, they found the small cabin filled with smoke, he said, and firefighters kicked in the door.
That’s when they saw the two adult female pit bulls and their 13 pups, Strickler said.
“One litter still had their eyes closed, so they were pretty young,” he said.
Initially, he was concerned the mother pit bulls might be protective of their young, but that proved not to be a problem.
“They were very friendly,” he said, but also frantic. “They wanted out — they were really struggling.”
Firefighters loaded all the pups into crates that were inside the cabin and rushed them outside, so they could get fresh air, Strickler said.
A heat lamp inside the cabin caused the small fire, which was quickly extinguished, he said.
The only damage to the cabin were broken windows, caused by firefighters venting the smoke, Strickler said.
Strickler said he does not yet have the name of the man who owns the cabin and the dogs. That man was at work in Baltimore at the time of the fire, Strickler said.
Fire crews were on scene for about an hour, then left, he said; state police remained on the scene to wait for the owner’s return.
