PEARL RIVER, N.Y. — A GoFundMe has been started for a New York firefighter who was seriously injured after falling into an abandoned well.

Pearl River Volunteer Firefighter Matt VanOrden, 20, was left trapped in the well for hours Thursday after falling at a property where he was inspecting a driveway for his landscaping job, according to Patch.

VanOrden was rescued after a passerby heard his cries for help after sundown on Thursday night.

The firefighter had fallen more than 25 feet and requires multiple surgeries, according to the GoFundMe.

As of Monday afternoon, the fundraiser had raised $3,860 of its $50,000 goal.

Pearl River Hook & Ladder Co. said in a Facebook post that VanOrden is one of their most active members and “has a long rough road ahead of him.”
