Man trapped in mud rescued by NJ firefighters

SECAUCUS, N.J. — Shortly after 11 yesterday morning, Secaucus firefighters rescued a man stuck waist-deep in mud at the foot of Paterson Plank Road in Trolley Park.

Two Department of Public Works employees — both volunteer firefighters, one of them Deputy Fire Chief William Sallick — were working at Trolley Park when they noticed a man waist-deep in the muck who needed help getting out, according to officials.

Sallick called the Fire Department and Rescue Marine 1 boat was launched from the Red Roof Inn and went to the scene, said Fire Chief George Schoenrock.

Schoenrock speculates the man — who is in his mid-20s and lives in Suffield, Conn. — must have walked out about 150 feet toward the Hackensack River at low tide before getting stuck in sediment that lies on the bottom of the river.

The man was pulled out by rescuers on the boat before the tide came in and he was taken to Meadowlands Hospital, where he was released later in the day. No injuries were reported. Police did not release name of the man.
