KENT, Ohio — A woman and child were rescued Saturday evening from the Cuyahoga River after they nearly drowned, officials say.
Authorities started receiving 911 calls about 7 p.m., stating that a small child and a woman were yelling for help from the water, just south of the Main Street Bridge, according to a news release on the Kent Fire Department’s Facebook page.
A whitewater kayaker had just gotten out of the river when he heard the shouts for help, the news release says. The kayaker got back into the river and rescued the duo from the water near the tip of the island downriver of the dam.

Minutes later, Kent police and fire rescue crews arrived at the scene and met the kayaker on the island in the river, the release says. The child was showing signs of a near-drowning.
A rescue boat reached the crews on the island and brought both the woman and child to shore at about 7:25 p.m., according to the news release.
The child was taken to Akron Children’s Hospital for treatment by paramedics. Neither the woman nor the child’s condition was released, though both were conscious at the time they were rescued, authorities said.
