MIDLAND, Texas — A Midland firefighter died in a shooting that led to a standoff with the suspect committing suicide Friday evening.
Midland Police and Fire departments responded in reference to a shots fired call at about 2:33 p.m. Friday in the 2200 block of South Baird Street in Midland, a City of Midland release stated.
First responders found Henry Rodriguez III, 35, outside the residence with life-threatening gunshot wounds, the release stated. Rodriguez was transported to Midland Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead shortly after, according to the release.
Rodriguez worked in the Midland Fire Department for more than 10 years, the release stated. A woman was present at the shooting but was not injured, the release stated.
Nestor Castro Jr., 35, was identified as the armed suspect, and he barricaded himself inside the residence, the release stated. Units from the Midland Police Department, Department of Public Safety, Midland County Sheriff’s Office and the Midland Independent School District Police responded to the scene.
Castro was found dead with a self-inflicted gunshot wound before 8 p.m., the release stated. MPD is conducting an investigation in connection with the incident.
