CANEY, Kan. — A firefighter died Thursday after collapsing at a firehouse while responding to a fire page for a grass fire.
Fox23 reported that firefighter Cliff Sanders, 55, with the Caney Fire Department, was transported to a hospital, where he died several hours later of a stroke.
“We had a couple calls yesterday morning, he was up here and we were all joking around and having a good time,” firefighter Billy Kolb said. “We don’t know what happened. He just started feeling bad. It was very unexpected.”
He has been a firefighter since 1991. This is the first line of duty death for the department.
“He liked his job, he did it with passion,” firefighter Kolb said. “He made his last call for us yesterday and we’re going to take care of it now for him.”
Funeral arrangements are pending.
