Volunteer firefighters scarce in Colo.

A shortage of volunteer firefighters in Colorado is threatening public safety in some areas by slowing down response times, officials say.

Nearly 60 percent of the state’s fire departments are all-volunteer, and many of them have trouble finding firefighters because of demographic trends, The Gazette of Colorado Springs reported Monday.

“At one time, someone could hop off their tractor and go to the fire hall; now that same person is working in information technology in Greenwood Village,” said Kevin Klein, director of the Colorado Division of Fire Safety.
