Crews battling two N.C. wildfires

LINVILLE GORGE, N.C. — Two wildfires have charred more than 900 acres of the parched Pisgah National Forest in western North Carolina, officials said Monday.

The weekend fires had not caused any injuries and did not immediately threaten any private property, officials said.

One had covered about 500 acres at Dobson Knob, about three miles north of Lake James, and the second, near Shortoff Mountain, had spread across more than 400 acres, said U.S. Forest Service spokesman Terry Seyden.

He said steep terrain made it difficult for fire crews to battle the blazes.

“Both fires are burning fairly actively,” Seyden said. “Everybody’s watching the weather.”

The National Weather Service said showers and spotty thunderstorms were possible in the area Monday evening.
