FORT COLLINS, Colo. — Cooler, calmer weather and possibly some rain could help crews on a Colorado wildfire, a day after winds caused a flare-up that prompted the evacuation of 20 houses as a precaution.
The fire whipped up Tuesday night when strong winds blew through the area west of Fort Collins.
Fire managers say the winds have calmed down and the humidity has increased. The wildfire that started in the foothills Friday has burned 5 square miles and destroyed about 15 homes and an unknown number of other structures. It’s about 15 percent contained.
The risk of new fires starting and spreading is highest in southern Colorado. Warnings are in place across the state’s southeastern plains and in lower elevations of the mountains in the south.
