A toxic, choking smell of smoke and dust is the memory Nobby Robson brought home for Christmas.

The Pohangina Department of Conservation supervisor and fellow Palmerston North DOC staffer Andy Mercer were members of the 45-strong Kiwi contingent to go to Victoria, Australia, to fight bushfires for 17 days in December.
Mr Robson took over as team leader after the accident that saw three Kiwi firefighters taken to hospital with burns injuries and prompted an investigation.
