CHICAGO — A sculpture that will honor fallen firefighters will feature steel from the World Trade Center.
WGNTV reported that the steel was donated in memory of Chicago Fire Department Captain Herbert Johnson, who was one of many Chicago firefighters that traveled to New York to help in the aftermath of the attacks.
After Johnson died battling a blaze in 2012, firefighters who became close to him during his time in New York gave the steel to Chicago to honor him.
After sitting in storage for almost five years, the steel is finally being put to use and will be crafted into the sculpture, which is being designed by artist Terrence Karpowicz.
The sculpture will be placed in King Lockhart Park, where two firefighters died. Johnson also lived down the street from the location.
