NEW YORK — An FDNY firefighter who responded to the 9/11 attacks died of esophageal cancer Jan. 22.

Funeral services were held Jan. 27 for firefighter Brian J. Masterson; he is the 124th responder to die from toxic fumes he inhaled following the attacks. Masterson responded to the 9/11 attacks and worked in the days following.

“9/11 FDNY Responder Brian Masterson was the Captain of his soul and of the hearts of those who knew him,” Claudia E. Thomas, Founder of the 9/11 Rescue Workers and Friends Forum Group, told the Daily Record. “His life was dedicated to the job he loved and started out back in 1990 and survived several life-threatening emergencies.”

Masterson was an avid marathon runner. He leaves behind his wife, three children and grandchildren.
