NEW YORK — An FDNY firefighter died Thursday after suffering from a 9/11-related illness.
NY Daily News reported that retired firefighter James “Jimmy” Lanza, 71, helped pull 16 survivors out of “miracle stairwell B” following the World Trade Center attacks. Lanza is the 10th firefighter to die of 9/11-related cancer this year.
Lanza, a Vietnam veteran, was diagnosed with metastatic brain cancer November 2016.
“He was a very generous guy … not only with his money, but his time,” Battalion Chief Jack Culkin, who was Lanza’s captain, said.
