KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Hundreds of firefighters climbed 110 stories to honor the firefighters who lost their lives responding to the 9/11 attacks.
KSHB reported that 343 firefighters were in full gear while making the trek to remember the fallen firefighters.
“Some take their tools, they’ll take a hose bundle as they would that day climbing up those stairs,” firefighter Kevin Joles said.
Upon entering the stairwell, firefighters touched a physical reminder of the tragic day.
“This is a piece of steel that actually came from the twin towers,” Joles said. “Each of the climbers will probably give it a touch.”
Each firefighter carried the name of a responder who died on September 11, and photos of the fallen lined the walls in the stairwell.
