LEXINGTON, Ky. — Campbellsville University has agreed to pay $4,000 to settle a workplace-safety citation issued in connection with a charity event that led to the death of a firefighter.
Two Campbellsville firefighters were injured Aug. 21 when they came in contact with a high-voltage power line while they were in the bucket of an aerial ladder truck.
The two had been spraying water on band members taking part in an Ice Bucket Challenge to raise research money for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, commonly called Lou Gehrig’s disease.
One firefighter, Capt. Tony Grider, later died.
An investigator for the state Office of Occupational Safety and Health issued a citation to the university because someone videotaping the event from atop a raised maintenance lift was not wearing a safety harness to keep from falling out.
The office proposed a fine of $7,000. That was amended to $4,000 after a conference between university and state officials, according to Daniel Lowry, spokesman for the state Labor Cabinet.
The cabinet is investigating the accident that resulted in Grider’s death, Lowry said.
