HOPEWELL, Va. — A video of two firefighters saving an American flag from a burning building has gone viral.
Fox News reported that the firefighters responded to a raging fire at a local Moose Lodge when Chief Donny Hunter began lowering the American flag.
“We took the opportunity to go up and save the flag as kind of a symbol of hope,” Hunter said.
Firefighter Timmy Cibula can be seen in the video helping Hunter with the flag as a third firefighter works the hose to protect them.
The firefighters later returned the flag to the governor of the lodge.
“I think the best statement was it just felt like the right thing because it’s a symbol and it’s a little bit of hope,” Hunter said.
Hunter added that the viral response to the video has been “overwhelming.”
“The flag means a lot to us especially in the fire service, we’re based on tradition,” Cibula said.
