BOYNTON BEACH, Fla. — There’s nothing like a feel-good story when it looks like a Category 5 hurricane named Irma is coming at you, so we bring you good news regarding the dog that was left tied to a tree outside a Boynton Beach fire rescue station in August.

The dog, who the firefighters nicknamed Axe, now has a forever home.

Here’s a quick review of what happened:

Boynton residents were attending a meeting at the fire rescue station in late August at Congress Avenue and Miner Road and notified firefighters that a dog was outside tied to a tree.

Long story short, news of the abandoned dog was spread on social media and Boynton Fire Lt. Joe Senseman became the dog’s spokesman. To this day, it hasn’t been made clear who abandoned the dog and why. But Senseman and his crew made it a point to make sure this dog found a home.

Animal Care and Control had to wait a period of time to allow for the owner to come forward before Axe could be adopted.

Time passed, and now Axe has a new home. Senseman said Axe now lives out west by The Acreage and lives with a family who recently had to put their 12-year-old German shepherd down.

For Senseman, and likely many others, this happy ending couldn’t have come at a better time.

“I think we all needed this continuation of his story right now,” he said.
