VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — The number of arsons reported in the Brigadoon section of the city has climbed to nine.
Residents reported seven suspicious fires in the neighborhood on Aug. 8, including one that caused about $65,000 in damage to a home, displacing its residents. The Fire Department announced Wednesday that investigators had linked an eighth fire to the arsons, and now a ninth arson has been reported.
A resident of the 5400 block of Brockie St., where four of the suspicious fires occurred Aug. 8, reported on Friday that she’d found burnt material in her recycling bin on trash day, said Battalion Chief Tim Riley, a spokesman for the Fire Department. The fire burned a few newspapers but did not cause any serious damage, Riley said.
Five homes have been damaged and one person was burned, fire officials said.
Most of the blazes started in trash cans or recycling bins. Investigator s are looking for whoever started the fires.
Riley said residents should report any fires set on their property, even if they don’t cause damage, because they may provide information that will help investigators solve this case. They should call Fire Investigations at (757) 385-4228.
Anyone with information on the arsons is asked to call Crime Solvers at 1-888-LOCK-U-UP (562-5887). The Virginia Chapter of the International Association of Arson Investigators is offering a reward of up to $5,000 for information that leads to an arrest or indictment.
