HONEYDEW, Calif. — More than 1,000 growing marijuana plants were discovered when California Department of Forestry firefighters responded to extinguish a blaze that engulfed several structures on property in the 5700 block of Wilder Ridge Road.
The Humboldt County Sheriff’s Department said deputies were called by the firefighters around 10 a.m. Tuesday when plants were discovered in three structures that were not destroyed by the fire.
The cause of the fire was linked to a diesel generator.
“The burned diesel generator was supplying electrical power to the indoor marijuana growing operation,” stated a Sheriff Department press release.
The firefighters said two men were seen running from scene when they arrived.
About 1,200 plants were found in the three structures that were still standing.
The Sheriff’s Department contacted Humboldt County Environmental Health to investigate the diesel generator and diesel tanks found at the property.
The case is under investigation by all three agencies.
