NEW YORK — A recent report revealed a 32 percent spike in FDNY firehouse cooking injuries.

According to the Mayor’s Management Report, 247 firefighters were burned in fiscal year 2018, with 41 of those burns from cooking, up from 2017’s 31 cooking burns, NY Post reported.

Another 41 burns also occurred during training, non-fire emergencies, equipment maintenance or “other” incidents.

FDNY officials advised firefighters how to avoid kitchen and equipment emergencies in the firehouse in response to the increase in cooking burns.

“We have a web-based training platform which describes/details safe practices in the workplace,” FDNY spokesperson Frank Gribbon said. “We also have safety bulletins that have been discussed and shared with members regarding safe operations both in and outside quarters.”

Safety recommendations from the FDNY include paying attention to food, wearing short sleeves while cooking, keeping a “pot lid handy to smother a pan fire” and staying in close proximity to your pan.
