FULTON, Mo. — A firefighter responding to a fatal automobile accident on Highway 54 near Fulton collapsed in his chief’s arms and died yesterday, a department spokeswoman said.

Capt. Alan Leake, 51, collapsed shortly after attending to an accident in which a driver lost control of his pickup, rolled several times and was ejected, said Vicki Schulte of the Fulton Fire Department.

After emergency responders administered CPR, the driver, 25-year-old John Robert Buchholz of Fulton, was airlifted to University Hospital in Columbia. He died during the flight.
