LEBANON, N.H. — Firefighters say a homeowner thawing frozen pipes with a torch in the basement set an 11-unit apartment building in Lebanon on fire.

Firefighters say the temperature was 20 degrees below zero yesterday morning when the torch set off the fire.

The fire spread quickly through the exterior balloon frame building to the upper floors.

The rear four apartments suffered major damage.

Two units in the middle were moderately damaged, and the rest had smoke and water damage.

No injuries were reported, but several pets are missing.

The Red Cross is providing emergency assistance to the displaced residents.
