CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Several firefighters had a few scary moments early this morning while battling a blaze in southeastern Mecklenburg County.

They had responded to a fire about 1:30 a.m. in the 10900 block of Deerberry Court, off Tilly Morris Road. That is about halfway between Interstate 485 and the Mecklenburg-Union county line.

Firefighters, apparently from the Providence Volunteer Fire Department, were battling the blaze, which might have been started by lightning. A severe storm had battered the area a short time earlier.

Several firefighters were inside the house when a portion of the roof collapsed, cutting off their escape route. The firefighters were able to climb out of a second-floor window, according to several media reports this morning.

No injuries were reported, and there is no damage estimate.
