IPSWICH, Mass. — Gregory Gagnon, a Massachusetts fire chief accused of choking and threatening to shoot his wife, has been ordered by a Lowell District Court judge to psychiatric treatment in Vermont, CBS Boston reports.

The 41-year-old Dracut resident was initially arrested and charged with allegedly assaulting his wife on Thursday of last week, released on bail, then arrested again Saturday, without bail, on additional assault charges.

According to media reports, investigating Dracut police were told by Gagnon’s wife of a second incident of assault against her by last year, leading to the new charges and second arrest.

The judge ordered Gagnon to a Vermont mental health facility Monday, adding he must turn himself over to police following his release. Gagnon faces charges of assault with a dangerous weapon, witness intimidation and two counts of assault and battery on a household member.

Ipswich town officials say Gagnon remains on the payroll and will spend the duration of his treatment on sick leave. His annual salary is $127,000.
