PLATTEVILLE, Iowa — Melissa Lovell, the first female firefighter to serve on the Platteville Fire Department, was recently honored as the city’s first female Firefighter of the Year.
The award is based on actions and contributions to the department over the past year and during the firefighter’s career. Lovell joined the department in July 1998.
A Benton native, Lovell’s father and grandfather were firefighters. She also was a part of emergency services while living in Benton.
Lovell is one of three females on the department, which includes 56 firefighters.
