MOREHEAD, Ky. — A Morehead firefighter was inducted into the Kentucky Firefighter Association’s Hall of Fame at its 89th annual conference last Tuesday in Lexington. After more than three decades of fire service, Ronnie Day’s name will be etched with the state’s firefighting elite.

“I’ve been doing this a long time and coming to the conferences and you sit every year admiring those that win,” Day said. “I’ve presented some years, and you always want to win but always think somebody deserves it more than you.”

Posthumously inducted into the hall from Morehead is the man that the Morehead Fire Department’s station number one is named, C.B. “Bud” McCullough. McCullough was the KFA President in 1952 and was the Chief of the Morehead Fire Department from 1939-1963. He died in 1964.

“There’s a good list of leaders and legends on that list and it’s an honor to be on that list,” Day said. “It’s a pretty neat honor and to be able to share it with my family means the world to me.”

“It’s a pretty high distinction to be inducted into this hall, which is to recognize those that have gone above and beyond the call of duty for the KFA,” said KFA president Bobby Cowherd. “Ronnie’s a real deserving person for this and I think the committee made an awesome choice,” said Cowherd. “He brought his knowledge of firefighting to the KFA and made it a stronger organization with what he has to offer.”

Day began his fire service career in 1975 joining the Morehead Fire Department at age 16. Advancing through the ranks he became Morehead’s first paid fire chief in 1988. While working in the Hazardous Material Division of the State Fire Marshal’s office, Day became known throughout the state assisting firefighters and departments. After taking a full-time position in the fire commission office, he assumed many roles, culminating with appointment as executive director in 2003. According to the firefighter’s association, Day represents the state and KFA on many national fronts.
