SPARTANBURG COUNTY, S.C. — An Upstate firefighter who was badly burned in a plane crash in May that took the lives of his mother, aunt and nephew is continuing his grueling road to recovery, according to Facebook updates from fellow firefighters.
Patrick Schultz, who is a licensed pilot, was flying the plane when it went down in Bay County, Fla. May 25.
He suffered third-degree burns on both arms and his left leg, and second-degree burns on his face. His right leg was most severely injured, with fourth-degree burns into the muscle tissue. Schultz is a career firefighter with the Pelham Fire Department and a volunteer firefighter for Cowpens. Both departments have held multiple fundraising events to support Schultz.
