FAYETTE COUNTY, Texas — A firefighter died Friday after succumbing to injuries he received while battling a wildfire.

KXAN reported that Ellinger Volunteer Fire Department firefighter Larry Marusik was badly burned March 10 while battling a large grass fire. He was transported to the hospital, where he died March 23.

“Our department is devastated by the loss of our member Larry Marusik,” EVFD president Dave Weishuhn said. “He loved his family, served many organizations and gave the ultimate sacrifice to protect the lives and property of his community. He will be greatly missed.”

Marusik was a member of the fire department for four years after returning to his hometown when he retired.

Fayette County Judge Ed Janecka ordered all flags be flown at half-staff in honor of Marusik.
