HUNTSVILLE, Ala. — Caleb Atnip, a Huntsville firefighter who inspired the community with his fight against cancer, has died.
Atnip was 26.
In 2015, Atnip was diagnosed with stage four colon cancer. His fellow firefighters in Huntsville held a variety of fundraisers to benefit Atnip and his wife, Savannah. A GoFundMe account in his name was also established.
Atnip chronicled his journey on the Facebook page “Caleb’s Cancer Updates.”
Shortly after his May 21, 2016 wedding, Atnip wrote the young couple, who were high school sweethearts, had spent their honeymoon in a hospital room at MD Anderson Hospital in Houston.
He’d earlier written:
“One year ago today I found out that I had cancer. This last year has been a whirlwind of surgeries, chemo, doctors visits, trips to Houston, more days in the hospital than I can count and more heartbreak than I could have ever imagined. However, in the darkness God found a way to give me strength, peace and a new purpose for my life. God took what most people believed to mean the end of my life and mean only bad and He redeemed it.”
Services for Atnip have not been announced.
